Car protection film types: the complete guide before you choose
With the widespread use of car protection films in Egypt, the market now has many types that differ completely in quality, price and lifespan, all sold under the same name: “protection film”. The problem is that the difference between them isn't small — it can cost you thousands of pounds and a completely different result after a year or two. In this article we show you the real types and how to choose the best one for your car.
Types by material
TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane): the genuine PPF material
This is what people actually mean when they say "PPF." It's made of a flexible, high-quality material, usually 150 to 250 microns thick. Its most important feature is Self-healing, meaning light surface scratches disappear on their own with heat (sun or warm water). It resists yellowing and UV rays, and its lifespan reaches 5 to 10 years with proper care.
This is the type we use at Dr Protect, because it's the only one that truly justifies the term "long-term protection."
PVC: the budget option (with risks)
PVC film is much cheaper than TPU and comes in many colors and styles, but it comes with clear compromises: a stiffer, less flexible material that tends to crack over time, especially in hot weather, and yellows quickly in direct sun. It has no self-healing at all, and worse, it can leave adhesive residue on the paint when removed. Its lifespan usually doesn't exceed one to two years.
TPH (thermoplastic hybrid): the middle ground
A newer type that sits halfway between PVC and TPU in price and performance. It offers reasonable resistance to surface scratches at a lower price than genuine TPU, but it has no self-healing, much lower resistance to stones and impacts, and a shorter warranty.
Types by final appearance
Gloss film
Preserves the original paint look and sometimes enhances its shine. The most requested, because it makes the car look exactly the same, just protected.
Matte film
Gives a velvety look completely different from normal gloss, an excellent choice for those who want to change their car's look without paying for a full respray. Exactly the same level of protection as gloss; the difference is purely visual.
The best-known international brands on the market
There are well-known international companies in the car protection film industry, each with its own position in the market:
- 3M: one of the most widespread and trusted names worldwide, known for consistent quality and strong self-healing
- XPEL: a strong competitor with advanced self-healing technology and a variety of finishes
- SunTek: an established American brand, good quality at a competitive price compared with the top tier
- LLumar: known for complete solutions combining body protection with window tinting
What matters isn't just the brand name, but whether the center installing it actually uses genuine certified material. Read more about how to tell genuine from fake before you decide.
How do you choose the right type for your car?
Your car's value and daily use
A luxury or new car, or one that covers long distances on gravel roads, is best suited to genuine TPU, no question.
The Egyptian climate
High heat and direct sunlight wear out cheap materials very quickly. In Egypt specifically, investing in genuine UV-resistant TPU isn't a luxury; it's a necessity to make sure the result actually lasts.
How long you'll keep the car
If you plan to keep the car for more than 3 years, TPU is the most economical choice despite its higher price, because it saves you repair and repaint costs later.
The parts of the car that need protection first
You don't have to cover the whole car to benefit; start with the most exposed areas:
- The front (bumper, hood, front fenders): most exposed to flying stones
- Side mirrors: take constant hits from traffic
- Door sills: prone to key scratches and daily getting in and out

Common mistakes when choosing a protection film type
- Choosing based on the lowest price only, without asking about the exact material
- Not checking for a written warranty before paying
- Installing at a non-specialized center or in a dusty environment, which causes air bubbles and lifting edges
Quick aftercare tips
- Wait 7 days before washing the car so the adhesive sets properly
- Hand wash with a pH-neutral shampoo, and avoid car washes with harsh brushes
- Clean bird droppings and insect residue immediately, as they're acidic and damage the film over time
Frequently asked questions
What's the best type of car protection film in Egypt? Genuine TPU is the only type that provides real physical protection with self-healing and a long lifespan, and it's what we recommend in a climate like Egypt's.
Is gloss film stronger than matte in protection? No, the protection level is the same for both; the difference is purely in the final look.
Is PVC worth the lower price? Usually not, because its short lifespan and tendency to crack and yellow mean you'll pay again after just a year or two.
Bottom line
Not every protection film is the same. The real difference is in the material itself (TPU vs. PVC or TPH), the finish that suits your taste (gloss or matte), and most importantly: who installs it and the source of the material they use. At Dr Protect we use only genuine TPU materials, with a warranty of up to 10–12 years on materials and installation.
